UglyRhino produces theater, concerts and parties, as well as micro-seasons showcasing all three. Each micro-season centers on two mainstage plays which are the heart of a larger artistic celebration that provides audiences with a variety of events on any given evening. UglyRhino’s residency at The Brooklyn Lyceum, a 10,000 square foot warehouse, allows for dynamic and non-traditional performance opportunities, as well as for large audiences of wide demographics.
Our inaugural micro-season in November 2010 featured the classic absurdist plays, Celebration by Harold Pinter and Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco, performed in repertory. This past July we presented an extended micro-season of entirely original plays, including the world premiere of #nyc (commissioned for UglyRhino) and the New York premiere of Grief (originally workshopped at The Old Vic in London). Each micro-season features an average of 20 bands, DJs and specialty acts which surround the mainstage plays.
Other events include the monthly TinyRhino, a theatrical drinking game where original plays and emerging directors meet a new social short-play-festival format. In March 2012, UglyRhino also presented a sold-out run of Centralia at The Brooklyn Lyceum. Inspired by UglyRhino's interactive party "Warehouse of Horrors", Centralia was the first production written and developed entirely by the UglyRhino company. Based on the true life ghost town, Centralia told the story of its last remaining residents through six interactive stories, each accompanied by a signature cocktail.
UglyRhino’s numerous warehouse parties incorporate performances, dancing, specialty cocktails and have featured some of Brooklyn’s best bands and DJs. Highlights include Warehouse New Year’s 2011, July 2011’s “Summer Fete” with Commandante Zero, and this year’s “CINCO” at Magic Futurebox, which featured five new curated cocktails, five original drinking games and the launch of Brooklyn’s newest DJ collective You Don’t Have to Settle.

UglyRhino is a new way to experience theater. Expanding on our high quality productions, we integrate dynamic arts programming ranging from emerging musicians to warehouse parties. UglyRhino curates affordable evenings with a social atmosphere that captures the inimitable spirit of Brooklyn. Our inaugural micro-season at The Brooklyn Lyceum in November 2010 was featured in Time Out New York’s Best of the Fests and Your Perfect Weekend, the New York Post, Metro Magazine, and NY Press.
The Brooklyn Lyceum
The Brooklyn Lyceum is a producing arts venue and cultural center on the edge of Gowanus. Originally opened in 1910 as an indoor bathing facility, it now plays host to a range of theatre, music, dance, markets and community activities. The Lyceum programs an ambitious season throughout the year and often co-produces with UglyRhino Productions. The Lyceum Café serves exquisite coffee and fresh-baked goods and is open to the public daily.
